Ackerman Family Vineyards

When purchasing our vineyard in Coombsville back in 1994, we were inspired by the legendary names and world class wines that the Napa Valley had become renowned for. Back then, Coombsville was an unknown corner of Napa, but had been consistently producing beautiful wines that echoed the flavor and style of Bordeaux for decades. Slowly, patiently, this southeastern corner of the Napa Valley came into its own over the years until it made its world debut as the 16th AVA within the Napa Valley in 2011. We knew, back in those early days, that the luscious, deep berry flavors, with leather, coco, spice and earthy notes that typically characterized Coombsville wines, would resonate with wine enthusiasts and collectors. Here at Ackerman Family Vineyards, we value wines that are rooted in tradition but made in the spirit of today. In 2007, we released our first commercial vintage — our 2003 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. About it, Master of Wine Peter Marks has said, “…consider yourself fortunate if you still have this in your cellar.” From the beginning, all of our actions in the vineyard have been purposeful. We began sustainable farming in 2003, and by 2009 we earned our California Certified Organic Farm (CCOF) label – the first to do so within the Coombsville appellation. To us, it’s a testament to our patience, time and commitment – striving for excellence is a never-ending goal.

Their story

Selling the company in 1988, she moved to the Bay Area from Southern California and, became an international management consultant to companies such as Philips Semiconductor, Hewlett Packard and Motorola. In 1994, she moved to the Napa Valley when she and her former husband purchased a 16 acre vineyard property in the Coombsville AVA. They started making wine in 1995 and eventually began selling commercially, starting with the 2003 vintage. Today, Lauren owns/manages Ackerman Family Vineyards, a boutique producer of cabernet sauvignon wines from the organically farmed Stonehaven vineyard. Read more about our team on our website.

Aileron Estates

Coombsville, Sauvignon Blanc, organic, dry farmed vineyard. Grown on an old river bed in the Coombsville district this vineyard produces only 3 tons to the acre. This gives the wine a concentrated mineral quality that is unique to its place. Due to the farming practices of organically grown and dry framed this vineyard is very sensitive to mother nature and the variations in weather from year to year, producing a singular wine that is nuanced with the different vintages.

Their story

Shannon O’Shaughnessy, proprietor, is a Minnesota native whose family moved to the Napa Valley in 1990 to become grape growers and vintners. In 1997, Shannon helped her family launch O’Shaughnessy Estate on Howell Mountain, where she was integral in developing the estate and winery and launching the brand. O’Shaughnessy has since gone on to become one of the world-class wineries in Napa Valley. In addition to raising two sons, Shannon has also worked for other wineries and distributors—all in preparation to establish her own estate winery one day. With Aileron Estates, Shannon is dedicated to making the highest-quality wines with a sense of place and vintage. To do that, she’s hired two of the top minds in wine: Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky, partners at Atelier Melka. Atelier Melka is internationally recognized as of as one of the top winemaking consultancies in the world, and has crafted top wines for Lail Vineyards, Dana Estates, Tusk Estates, as well as many others.

Ancien Wines

Ancien is the quest of a winemaker in pursuit of his art, and a celebration of the traditions in wine that have inspired him. Our quest begins with the search for the highest quality sites in the range of terroirs in which we work - those we hope to be of “Grand Cru” stature in their separate Viticultural Areas (AVA). Ours has been a unique approach in that the majority of our vineyards were custom planted in partnership with small scale farmers. As it stands, our current lineup includes vines grown in the following viticultural areas: Carneros, Coombsville, Russian River, Sonoma Mountain, Willamette Valley, Santa Rita Hills.

Their story

Co-Founders Teresa and Ken Bernards. As a lifelong Napa native, Teresa viewed vineyards and wineries as ever present, simply a part of the local landscape. By the time she was attending Napa High, the local industry offered a great way to make a little extra money – albeit through hard and physical work. Teresa hand harvested grapes for Mayacamas and Far Niente early on. Looking to avoid the heat and the dust, she quickly moved to a supervisory role overseeing bottling crews for various wineries throughout Napa. At an early age, wInemaker Ken displayed a penchant for forging his own path and doing what others dismissed as folly or impossible. Growing up in Oregon, he was impressed by the handful of pioneers who embraced the challenging and romanticized grape Pinot Noir – even while little wine culture existed at the time. His evolving interest in wine led him to work his first harvest in Napa Valley in 1986, while still pursuing his degree in chemistry at Oregon State University. As a student, he discovered his interest in the complexities of flavor dovetailed rather nicely with the field of Flavor Chemistry. His last two years saw time spent in undergraduate research on hops and wine.

Arcadia Vineyard

Arcadia Vineyard is a 135-acre property with 84 planted vineyard acres, located near Mount George, on the east side of Napa Valley in the Coombsville AVA. The vineyard is named after the idyllic land of Greek Mythology, Arcadia: a utopia of unspoiled wilderness and natural harmony. Warren Winiarski has placed the entire vineyard property, planted acres and natural habitat, into the Land Trust of Napa County, so in perpetuity it will stay in natural harmony with nature as intended and never be developed.

Their story

Warren Winiarski purchased Arcadia Vineyard in 1996 from Mike Grgich’s business partner, Austin Hills of Grgich Hills Estate, to harvest Chardonnay grapes for his winery, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. After the sale of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in 2007, Arcadia Vineyard was retained by the Winiarski Family. It continues to provide grapes to the estate on a contract basis and is currently planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Arcadia Vineyard grapes, in large part, are currently sold to Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars for a vineyard designated Arcadia Vineyard Chardonnay. Arcadia fruit also makes up 10-15% of its prestigious Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon. John Kongsgaard sources Chardonnay from Arcadia Vineyard as part of his Kongsgaard Napa Valley Chardonnay.

Arrow&Branch

Arrow&Branch exists to showcase Napa Valley’s finest vineyard sites and the wines that come from them. We source our fruit from unique and exquisite vineyard sites, such as Vine Hill Ranch, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Arrow&Branch, Lewelling and Stagecoach. These vineyards are all noted for having exceptional Napa Valley terroir. We seek to make wines with precision, power and elegance, but most importantly, true to the vineyards they come from.

Their story

Arrow&Branch proprietors Steve and Seanne Contursi share a great love for the wines of Bordeaux, particularly those produced with a large quantity of Cabernet Franc, such as Château Cheval Blanc. The couple began their romance while traveling through Bordeaux in the mid 1980’s, and have since found their dreams come true in being able to live and make wine in Napa Valley. They sought out their Coombsville vineyard property with an eye to producing top-quality Bordeaux blend wines from Napa Valley.

Asymmetric Vineyards

Asymmetric is a new, premium Cabernet Sauvignon made in the Coombsville AVA of Napa, CA. Nothing particularly unique about that. The new part is the social experience. Each bottle has a unique QR code. Simply scan it with your phone and you enter the Asymmetric Wine Club where you'll see other people who also just opened their bottle, where they are in the world, what the occasion was and what other things they are passionate about. Traditional wine clubs are limited to people who can physically visit the winery and mostly exist to sell you more wine. The Asymmetric Wine Club is an experiment to bring together a small (only 120 cases so far!) and interesting group of people who share a love for premium cabernet and the dorkiness to scan a QR code on a wine bottle. We're also going to experiment with giving everyone who posesses a bottle an NFT which will serve as the membership card for the club. NFTs are still hard to use so that part is optional... So: buy a bottle, scan the code, join the club. We're excited to see the group that gets formed here!

From Proprietor and Winemaker, Tracey Reichow: "I craft the wines of Black Cat Vineyard by hand, with a passion for perfection. I develop an intimate sense of each wine, from soil to cellar to bottle, with keen observations, an experienced hand, and a highly personal relationship with the wines. Each bottle from Black Cat Vineyard is a wine of the heart, an elegant expression of my unparalleled commitment to quality and finesse. All my wines are hand-grown and hand-crafted, in very small quantities. It is my pleasure to share them with you."

Their story

COOMBSVILLE, NAPA VALLEY Our estate vineyards and home are located in the Coombsville area, a scenic region of rolling benchlands and hidden wineries. Close to the town of Napa, yet miles away in its charming rural character, Coombsville was home to some of the Valley's earliest vineyards in the 1840's. Coombsville is a sweet spot for Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Rocky volcanic soils, light morning fog and afternoon breezes here create idyllic conditions for the elegant characteristics of these varietals. With ripening occurring at a consistent, moderate pace, the wines are approachable, yet sophisticated, complex and layered.

Caldera Vineyard

The better the dirt, the better the wine. We have the best dirt.

Their story

Larry and Maria Dondero are very fortunate to have the opportunity to live on a vineyard in the Napa Valley in one of, if not the best, wine growing regions in the world. Within this area, we have a unique location. The property is in a caldera which gives us amazing volcanic soil. The elevation is a little higher than the valley floor thus we get the cool breeze from the bay in the afternoon. By 2 o’clock you will usually feel the breeze on your back. We are fortunate that the grapes can hang on the vine a little longer than in other areas. All of this combined, the grapes produce a wine with unique flavors like no other.

Caldwell Vineyard

Their story

Owner John Caldwell's family has a long history of growing grapes in California dating back to the 1880s. Perhaps drawing from his heritage, despite few vineyards being planted in this part of Coombsville in those years, John began to develop vineyards on his property with the help of his father Jack in 1980. Today the site is planted to 10 different varieties including two unusual varieties for Napa Valley, Carménère (planted in parts of Bordeaux with its largest plantings in Chile – interestingly, the leaves on this variety naturally turn red at the end of the growing season – not from any disease) and Tannat – a grape primarily associated with Uruguay (and a prominent variety at another Napa Valley ‘vintner’s winery in Uruguay, Alejandro Bulgheroni’s Bodega Garzon). Caldwell is a name in Napa Valley that has become synonymous with the word clone. John has both provided his expertise and cuttings from his own vineyard to sites around Napa Valley. He even helped us identify a nursery source when we were looking to buy some Marselan (a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache) and planted some of this variety on a lower part of their property in September 2021. As of our latest update to this review, they have the largest planting of Marselan in Napa Valley (others with this variety include Helena View Johnston and Spottswoode has a very small section of vines).

Covert Estate

At Covert Estate, we utilize a conservative and sustainable approach that respects the terroir and results in wines that are delicate and elegant with distinct personality. The Estate is located on the eastern hills of the Vacas Mountain Range in the Coombsville AVA. The winery sits underground between the vineyard and an oak grove, only to be seen from a bird’s-eye view. Out of respect for the environment, we are committed to making a minimal footprint on the land. Dedicated, extraordinary and unexpected — that is Covert Estate.

Their story

Covert Estate is the result of the collaboration and hard work of three families dedicated to the craft of winemaking: Cal and Pam Nicholson, library wine collectors and vintners; Dave and Laura Nestor, extensive California wine collectors and management gurus; and Julien Fayard, French winemaker and Californian wine lover with a legacy of winemaking in both France and Napa Valley using traditional techniques to create wine filled with finesse and a sense of place.

Del Roba Vineyards

The most distinctive feature of wines from Del Roba vineyard is the 40-50 year old vines with small berries with a greater ratio of tannin-packed skin to juice, which ripen slowly. This, combined with the long hang times create rich wines with “blue notes” characteristic of the Coombsville AVA.

Their story

The lifelong dream of owning a vineyard eventually came to fruition for Bruce and his wife, Sima, after they purchased a Vineyard in Coombsville in 2019. The estate currently has 1.5 acres of 40 year old Cabernet Sauvignon (clone 4)and an acre of 45-50 year old Merlot (clone 6) that were previously sold to bulk wine makers. However, Bruce’s love and affinity to high-end wines persuaded him to put together plans to improve farming significantly and eventually they were able to sell the grapes to premium winemakers as well as making estate wines themselves. The wines are very rich and display classic Coombsville terroir.

Dickhaus Valley Vineyards

If you listen at night, you can hear the vineyard singing, “rugged we are with a tame soul.”

Their story

For the past 24 years, Harry and Gail Dickhaus have sold fruit to high-end wineries such as Porter, Sullivan, Hesperian, Caldwell, and Raymond. Their thoughts on Coombsville? The unique soils seem to have a rugged soul. The grapes yell out, “I am my own soil, do not try to change me. Take care of the vineyard, love it, and caress the bounty.” If all goes well, a beautiful new tamed soul develops every year in a wine bottle.

Duhig Wine

Our principles of farming are simple: Grow with synchronicity of the season, hand in hand with nature, while letting the story of our vineyard reveal itself. This results in berries that are light in the hand, and intense as wine

Their story

The Duhigs settled in the area known today as Carneros in 1853. Like many early pioneers, they were ranchers, farmers, and homesteaders, and they self-sufficiently grew food and produced their first wine grapes in 1858. “As a 5th Generation Napa Valley native, I am so proud to grow estate-grown Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon in continuation of our family’s farming heritage- while creating our own,” says co-proprietor John Duhig. “My ancestral lineage has played a strong role in how I have evolved. My mother’s Native American culture planted the seeds of connection early in my life. I found my path to growing grapes and making wine through a strong affinity to nature and gardening as a young girl,” share co-proprietor Harvest Duhig. Harvest graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Viticulture and Enology in 2001, and is a seasoned veteran in the vines, and on the crushpad… Duhig Wine is the accumulation of over two decades of experience growing exceptional grapes and making wine.

Far Niente

Far Niente is consistently recognized as a benchmark producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ours is an unparalleled level of time-honored winemaking traditions. There’s not one aspect of Far Niente that isn’t touched by our passion and precision. From the moment we open our gates to your first sip of our wines, you are transported to a place and experience unrivaled in excellence.

Their story

Our history was shaped by dreamers, doers, and craftsmen — all in pursuit of perfection in winemaking. Far Niente was founded in Oakville, California in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush and uncle of the famous American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. Benson hired architect Hamden McIntyre, and together they worked to create an exquisite oasis in western Oakville. Far Niente prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919. The gates closed, but the magic never truly disappeared from the property. Sixty years later, Gil Nickel bought and restored the winery and neighboring vineyard. This three-year-long labor of love put the label back on the map — and on the National Register of Historic Places. He preserved the Far Niente name — an Italian phrase which romantically translated means ‘without a care.’ Nickel hoped to recapture a bygone era when life was indeed without a care. To this day, Far Niente is consistently recognized as a benchmark producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Ours is an unparalleled level of time-honored winemaking traditions. This has helped establish Far Niente as one of the world’s great wine estates.

Farella Vineyard

Producing estate grown, terroir driven wines since 1977

Their story

Tom Farella’s original inspiration to enter the wine trade began as a youngster at the dinner table and was later fortified by a family trip to France and some gentle prodding by father Frank. He graduated from UC Davis in 1983 with a degree in Viticulture and Enology while holding down weekend and harvest work with Neyers Vineyards and Flora Springs Winery. His first real job was as winemaker at Preston in Sonoma County which he left after six years to work in Burgundy for Domaine Jacques Prieur in Meursault in 1989. The work/travel bug persisted so he then worked in Oregon for a harvest at Ponzi Winery in 1990, then in the vineyard for Beaux Freres in 1991. It was after these rich experiences that Tom Farella came back to Farella full time. Frank Farella founded Farella-Park Vineyards in 1985 in a small, 400 square foot winery next to his house in Napa. His long-sought goal to grow fine wine grapes from a modest, depression-era background was a story that unfolded slowly and steadily. Beginning with his Italian grandparents at home, many home-made wines from the Napa and Alexander Valleys, and ultimately, a test vintage in 1982 from young Farella Vineyard grapes, the commercial venture began in 1985 as a barrel of Chardonnay, a stainless fermented Sauvignon Blanc and a Merlot/Cabernet field blend. While the first 5 vintages were produced by Frank Farella (with Tom’s help), Tom took over in 1991 and led the winemaking until the end of 2018. Ryan Pass, also a UC Davis Viticulture and Enology graduate, was then promoted to Winemaker. His passion and skill set have dovetailed perfectly for the winemaking goals and he and Tom continue to work together as the sole labor and expertise for production of Farella wines. In 2009, in the midst of the Great Recession, Tom steered his sights to writing a petition then sent to the federal government for the designation of “Coombsville” American Viticultural Area (AVA). It would become Napa Valley’s 16th sub-AVA in November, 2011.

Favia

We are partners, a family, a team. And there is our home — a house and cellar, gardens and fruit trees: a collaboration that has meandered across generations, its stone first laid by Napa Valley’s earliest Italian immigrants. Our collaboration then wends outward and into the neighboring hills, visiting familiar vines and their tending hands. In these vineyards, curiosity and humility assemble to listen closely to the history of ancient soils, the natural currents of the everyday, and the myriad voices of those who foster the patient growth and harvest of our grapes. Favia is a celebration of a place and its people. Time, too, is our partner, immense and inexorable. We encounter millennia in the volcanic upheaval of our surrounds. Our vines enunciate the intricacies of the four seasons. Our stone cellar echoes with memory of vintages a century past. And finally, our work rests in barrel, quietly finding its voice over years. At its center, our work is a partnership with Nature. With reverence, we usher our bounty toward a new expression; we seek to bottle a glimpse of a time and place. Favia is the ever-resonant telling of a story still being written.

Ferrogiaro Vineyard

Their story

Proprietors Gwen and John Callan purchased the 13-acre property named Secret Garden for its bountiful rose garden. Secret Garden has been featured in Gardens of the Wine Country by Molly Chappellet and the Napa Valley Symphony Home and Garden Tour. Gwen and John chose the name Ferrogiaro Vineyard in honor of John's fourth generation heritage in Napa. His maternal great grandparents Virginia Tornari and Giani Baptiste arrived in Napa in the 1870s. Virginia came from Corbessassi in the province of Pavia (Lombardia) and Giani originated from Tasso in the province of Genova (Liguria). Residing down the street in the Old Adobe was Cayatano Juarez who periodically had dinner with the Ferrogiaro family. Virginia and Giani Baptiste built the Depot Hotel, still standing today on Soscol Ave.

The Estate vineyard is nestled in the southeastern corner of the Napa Valley at the base of the Vaca Mountain Range. It is located in the heart of the Coombsville AVA, and is in good company with the adjacent Paul Hobbs "Nathan Coombs Vineyard". Known for its volcanic, mineral rich soil, the area is known to produce structured and complex fruit. Our 11 acre property is planted with 7 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, and our grapes are sure to be as stunning as the magnificent estate on which they are grown.

Their story

Marilyn Hendrickson, proprietor and matriarch, has been developing vineyards and growing grapes for 30 years. Her appreciation for the land that has been part of our family heritage for more than 100 years and five generations is the inspiration behind our grapes. To bring honor to this legacy, only the highest quality will suffice. She takes pride in and is committed to growing only the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes through a hands-on approach. Building on this heritage has truly become a family affair from start to finish, as she passes along her expertise to her children, ensuring quality grapes for years to come.

Krupp Brothers Winery and Estate

Our winery is the dream of two brothers who nurtured a passion for wine over decades. After setting down roots in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jan - an internist with a bustling medical practice - pursued his winemaking as a hobby for 15 years. While continuing to commute to his medical practice, Jan moved to Napa in 1991 and began to tend grapes – first planting a vineyard surrounding his family's house and then with the help of Bart, he would develop what would become one of Napa's most iconic vineyards, Stagecoach. In 1999, Jan and Bart founded Krupp Brothers, producing their first vintage: An extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignon. Our wines begin at the source – fruit from select blocks that have been carefully chosen by Jan. Today, each wine in our collection – from our mountain Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignons to our Rhone-style Syrah and Tempranillo-based red – embody the vision and passion that guided the two brothers. We invite you to try them.

Their story

Jan Krupp Founder An oenophile with a green thumb, Jan was a hobby winemaker and suburban farmer in the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. Though a full-time doctor, in his spare time, he grew everything from green beans to gooseberries and produced beautiful wines, using his driveway and basement as a makeshift winery. While still a full-time doctor Jan moved to Napa in 1991, to start growing things on a larger scale - beginning with a 41-acre vineyard around his new home. With his brother Bart, he would develop two more vineyards, including the iconic Stagecoach Vineyard. In 1998, he sold his medical practice and the following year, Bart and Jan founded the winery. Bart Krupp Founder Bart was in his early 20s when his older brother Jan would return to New Jersey to visit his family with magnificent California wines in tow. As Bart began to become more knowledgeable, he would seek out European wines – which were then much more prevalent than California wines on the east coast – for his brother to try. Together, the two developed their palates, broadened their knowledge and strengthened their brotherly bond. Bart's wise counsel and support have been crucial to the success of the vineyards and Krupp Brothers. Bart divides his time between Montclair, New Jersey – not far from where the brothers grew up – and Napa.

Le Chanceux Belles Filles Vineyard

There is probably no other wine grape variety that better reflects the place from which it comes than Cabernet Sauvignon. Soil, geographic orientation and climate all contribute to a vineyards “terroir,” and the Cabernet Sauvignon grape provides the perfect structure upon which these distinct characteristics can emerge. The geographical location and terrain of Coombsville has unique microclimates which provide a long growing season where grapes develop a superb range of flavors with extended hang time. The Cabs from this area tend to lean more toward Bordeaux style wines than the rest of the valley. Le Chanceux is family owned and operated with a small production of approximately 200 cases annually. Every vintage is unique and carefully nurtured along on the vines until optimum quality is reached. Our small batches are hand crafted with minimal intervention and maximum attention and are aged in French oak barrels.

Their story

In 1999 Robert & Susan McNerney purchased a 2 acre property in East Napa and in 2002 planted 1 acre of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes known to be the best varietal to thrive in this area. Their Coombsville property was later to become a part of the 16th AVA of the Napa Valley in 2011. Planted with a vision of sharing a small lot Cabernet with family and friends while selling the bulk of the grapes to help provide income for their still young family of five was their goal. In 2005, they harvested the first small tonnage (approx1.5 ton) which was the regions record cabernet crop and with a glut in the market, were unable to sell their fruit. The only other options were to “drop” the fruit or make wine. With the later decision, they became “accidental vintners”. For weeks our family of five debated various label names for their “accidental wine” and it was their three daughters, Lauren, Ellen & Jennifer who came up with Le Chanceux, which is French for The Lucky One. After all, their mother’s mantra during their formative years was always “Do you know how lucky you are?” Pair that with a mother who was a bit of a Francophile, a French root stock and a Bordeaux varietal, what else could be more appropriate? Le Chanceux was born and in honor of, and as a legacy to leave their 3 daughters, Belles Filles Vineyard, French for “beautiful daughters” was chosen for the vineyard name.

Their story

Marita’s Vineyard began with a dream of a father and his two sons to own a vineyard and produce great wine. In 2001, this dream materialized from the work of Bulmaro with his father’s dedication, work ethics, expertise, and skills. Bulmaro embarked on his wine-making journey. Today, Marita’s Vineyard puts into fruition Manuel Sr.’s dream of creating a phenomenal wine: the product of the highest quality based on hard work, experience, lifelong learning, and passion for perfection. Mark Herold Wines

For those who know him, Mark Herold is a larger than life, exuberant person who lives with gusto and possesses a depth of interest and lust for life that is contagious to those around him. His wines embody that same spirit! Mark Herold’s first personal wine project, Merus, was a labor of love. For many years this wine was made in his home garage in downtown Napa and focused on premium Cabernet Sauvignon.

Their story

Mark has been working in the Coombsville AVA since 1996 during his tenure at Joseph Phelps as Research Enologist where he dove into phenolics experimentation throughout Napa Valley. He was asked to determine patterns within appellations with special regard to the phenolic data. Mark found that the data favored Coombsville by a considerable amount. For Cabernet Sauvignon it creates wines with concentrated balance.

Maroon Wines

Our philosophy is that all great wines start in the vineyard and end with the best of friends. We believe wine is a vessel to bring people together, share stories, and make memories. We are farmers and grape growers, and our legacy is rooted in supporting our neighbors and friends. All our grapes are grown or sourced from small family farms, single vineyards and are 100% varietals. Maroon Wines represent Mother Nature’s simplicity with each year's vintage.

Their story

Nearly twenty years ago, Paul Maroon's winemaking dream began with the purchase of 300 acres on the backside of Howell Mountain in Pope Valley, which he later sold. Around the same time, he also acquired the 37 acres that would become Maroon’s permanent home, in what is now part of the prestigious “Coombsville Appellation". Today, 17 acres of this land is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, which produces Maroon's Estate wines. For ten years, Paul sold his Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to several esteemed Napa Valley wineries. He then realized the high quality of our single-vineyard fruit, and the first commercial vintage of Maroon Wines was produced in 2009. Our home vineyard in Coombsville is located in a bowl-shaped depression topped by Mt George, an extinct volcano. The grapes benefit from slower and more even ripening due to our location in the southern end of Napa Valley. Here, the fog burns off later in the day and frosts are less likely to occur. Our land is a mosaic of rocky volcanic soil and rich gravelly loams, which provides both easy drainage and water access for our vines. This unique landscape results in exquisitely balanced wines.

Meteor Vineyard

Meteor Vineyard is the confluence of an extraordinary Cabernet vineyard in the southeast corner of Napa Valley, the entrepreneurial vision of internet pioneer Barry Schuler, the viticulture history and expertise of Mike Wolf and the consummate winemaking talents of Bill and Dawnine Dyer. Located on a knoll in Napa Valley’s Coombsville appellation, our unique combination of elevation, aspect and stony, rich volcanic soil produces some of Napa Valley’s most distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon. We produce just two wines, both all estate and 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Additionally, as our wines are made for the long term, we keep a complete library going back to the inaugural 2005.

Their story

Barry and his wife Tracy bought the property that is now Meteor Vineyard in 1998 and hired legendary viticulturalist Mike Wolf to assess the potential of the property. Located on a knoll in Napa Valley’s Coombsville region, Mike quickly recognized that Meteor Vineyard’s unique combination of elevation, aspect and stony, rich volcanic soil was an optimal site for 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Planted in 1999 to 3 distinct clone and rootstock combinations, it was immediately clear that the Schuler’s had found something special. By the time the vineyard was ready for it’s first harvest, prestigious names such as Etude, Vineyard 29, Arietta, Favia and Lail Vineyards were clamoring to work in the vineyard. In addition to the above, Mike introduced the Schuler’s to Bill and Dawnine Dyer. The rest, as the cliché says, is history. One of the very interesting things about selling fruit to multiple sources is to taste the individual renditions of the vineyard. While a common thread is obvious, the minute decisions made in the winery are always pronounced. The Dyer’s focus on elegance and balance immediately struck a chord. The seeds of a 100% Meteor Vineyard bottling were planted.

Napa de Oro

Napa de Oro produces seven varietals of wine, from the most popular white wine, Chardonnay, to the most popular red wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, and five varietals in between. Its Bordeaux Style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc is an expression of harmony and power and appropriately named after Caroline, in recognition of her priceless contribution to the company.

Their story

Noe and Caroline Taojo love to travel around the world with their children, Denise, Ingrid, Iñigo and Andreas, when they’re not watching over the family’s gold mining business. Over the years, Noe developed a yearning for great wines and began to chase a dream to produce his own brand, with the same passion and dedication that he is known for. The Napa de Oro brand (yes, it’s “Oro” for “Gold”) was born when Noe’s recent trip to Napa in California connected him to Rudy Zuidema, internationally-known and one of Napa’s top winemakers. The Napa de Oro vineyard and winery are based in the Coombsville appellation of Napa Valley, one of the cooler regions of the Napa Valley known for producing wines with excellent structure and silky texture. Napa de Oro wines stand out for their fragrant aromas, sophistication, elegance, balance and complexity and beauty.

Palmaz Vineyards

Producing great wine begins with the vineyard, and tending to the vines at Palmaz is done with a full-time vineyard team. Few winery estates still host their own full-time crew, but at Palmaz the intricate work of tending to the various vineyard parcels and their diverse terrain is done with a team of 13 professionals. Lead by vineyard manager José Palafox and renowned consultant and viticulturist Mike Wolf, the vineyard team is a tight-knit group of passionate farmers dedicated to the craft of growing exceptional wines. We have always believed in natural winemaking methods. That’s why our winery was designed as a gravity-flow facility. The gentle handling throughout the vinification process lets our winemaking team – Tina Mitchell and consultant, Mia Klein create wines that are supple, balanced and true to our unique terroir.

Their story

The Palmaz family, along with their winery and vineyard teams, spends every day thinking about how to blend technology and tradition to create superior wine. Two generations of the Palmaz family have sought to bring innovation and invention to the ancient art of making wine. Their background in the sciences, passion for living life to the fullest and years of backbreaking work have resulted in a unique winery situated inside an 18-story cave that combines cutting-edge technology with a respect for winemaking tradition.

Porter Family Vineyards

Porter Family Vineyards lie in the idyllic south eastern hills of Napa, above a quiet hamlet called Coombsville. As with Napa in general, Coombsville is blessed with generous amounts of warming sunshine, yet cooled by the breezes from San Pablo Bay. Our vineyards lie amongst these ideal conditions for grape growing. The soils here are a mix of clay loam and volcanic derivatives. Our grape vines, terraced to follow the contours of the gracefully arching hills, are 600 feet above the valley floor, and look out over the breathtaking terrain of Napa. We carefully tend to 14 acres, gently coaxing only 2 to 3 tons per acre so that each of the vine’s berries get enough of our sunshine and water to grow into deliciously concentrated fruit. Most of our land is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon loves the conditions in our little hamlet-- as do the other famous Bordeaux varietals--Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Wine lore has it that Syrah loves a view, and our Syrah vines create magnificently rich and round wines when cultivated on our hillside vineyard estate, overlooking majestic Napa Valley.

Their story

The Porter Family Vineyards family tree has three main branches: the winemaking team, the vineyard team, and the sales team. The Porters and Wolfes themselves are deeply entwined in each of these branches, providing leadership, support, or hard labor to whatever task is at hand, whether it’s helping during harvest and crush operations, pouring tastings and giving tours, designing new technology and solving problems, conducting vineyard experiments, running laboratory analyses, planning events, or balancing the books. This is truly a family owned and operated venture.

Redmon Wines

Right from the beginning we made the choice to create wine of the highest quality. That means no shortcuts. French oak barrels, premiere vineyards, and winemaking practices that result in a truly handcrafted product. To increase concentration, complexity, and the overall quality of our fruit, we cut historically low yields of our vineyard in half! Each summer we do a “green drop,” meaning we cut off every other cluster of fruit. This improves quality because the available nutrients go into half as much fruit as they would otherwise. Mother Nature helps us out as well. Located on the St. Helena bench, our vineyard contains dry, rocky soil from the Mayacamas Mountains, mixed with lush, volcanic soil from the valley floor. This unique soil combination results in a soft and elegant Cabernet of superb quality.

Their story

Lisa moved to the small farming community of Saint Helena, California, with her family in the early 1970’s. At the time, there were only about 50 wineries in Napa Valley. The family’s move to the area was prompted by the decision to buy the local A&W Restaurant. They did just that, and after purchasing, ran the restaurant for 35 years. As a hard-working family, Lisa learned from an early age the importance of a good work ethic. She remained in Saint Helena until leaving to attend college at the University of San Francisco. Then after graduating with a degree in Finance, Lisa landed in the corporate world of business development for the next 12 years. Always having an entrepreneurial spirit, it didn’t take much time before she felt the longing to start a business of her own. She decided to head back home to Napa Valley to take a break and pause for some serious thought. Once home, she took notice of a small vineyard that her family had purchased with the profits from the restaurant. This was exactly the nudge she needed and with her business background and entrepreneurial spirit, thus began the journey of building Redmon Wines. As a female proprietor and business owner in the wine industry, Lisa has always remained (and will continue), to stay true to her roots and vision to produce small lot, artisanal wines of the highest caliber and offer them to the wonderful friends, both new and past, who come her way. She feels very fortunate to be working in an industry that she has so much passion and love for!

Rocca Wines

Rocca’s estate vineyards are tended by hand, with every row and vine known by heart. Our family’s steadfast belief in organic and attentive farming continues into the cellar, where we craft excellent estate Cabernet Sauvignons that perfectly reflect our vineyards’ distinctive qualities. The story of Rocca Family Vineyards starts with the land. In 1999, in the heart of the Napa Valley, Mary Rocca and her husband Dr. Eric Grigsby fell in love with a 21-acre vineyard in Yountville, and bought it with a handshake and a promise to revitalize it. The vineyard was soon converted to a sustainable, organically farmed operation, now planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The Grigsby Vineyard quickly became a high-quality grape supplier to various Napa Valley wineries while the family embarked on creating the first Rocca wine, harvesting the first vintage in 2000. That same year, Mary and Eric acquired a beautiful, 11-acre hilltop property in the Coombsville Appellation, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines, and christened it Collinetta, meaning “little hilltop”. Now, over two decades later, the care and attention we take in our vineyards directly translates to our high-quality, expressive wines, year after year, and we are proud to share them with you. Focusing on our single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, our wines are now only available directly from the winery, and made in small quantities, and are allocated to our members. We invite you to visit us, taste our wines, and get to know a very special part of Napa Valley.

Their story

PROPRIETORS, Mary Rocca and Dr. Eric Grigsby - Raised in the Sonoma countryside, Mary Rocca met Eric Grigsby in medical school at Boston University. A Tennessee native, he also grew up in a rural setting, gardening and tending the land with his father. After marriage and more medical school at the Mayo Clinic, along with a growing family, they decided to move back to Mary’s roots in Northern California, knowing that they ultimately wanted land to farm and cultivate.

Scalon Cellars

Our grapes are from vines planted atop the Coombsville section of the Napa Valley. Our vines are legendary, known for regulating the vigor of their fruits and propelling them to their maximum expression. We apply a moderate level of stress to the vine and are vigilant of the balance between load to leaf. This process leads to the creation of a traditional wine, a wine that is the ultimate expression borne from the many hands of our Scalon family.

Their story

As a young man Jesus Espinoza worked in Napa planting grape vines as a laborer. Over 20 years later, destiny has taken him back to the same ranch, but this time as the owner of the grapes. In 2005, Cruz Calderon started construction of the prestigious wine cave at Caldwell Vineyard in the Coombsville District of Napa where Jesus resides as the Vineyard Manager. It is here that they forged their friendship and it is here, within the cave that Cruz constructed, and using the fruit from the vines Jesus planted, that Scalon Cellars has been born.

Sciandri Family Vineyards

In 2006 we launched Sciandri Family Vineyards. Our first wine was an Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon. We have since grown our portfolio to offer our Coombsville Cuvee, a Rose, a Sauvignon Blanc, and a special 4 barrel production of a wine called “Nello“. Named in honor of Ron Sr’s father, who taught us about gardening, farming, and all the importance of being good stewards of the land. To that end, the 4+ acre vineyard on it’s 20 acre estate is allied with the Napa Green Certified Land Program, which includes a certification for Fish Friendly Farming. The family focuses on sustainable practices related to soil, drainage, wildlife and more. As with all family businesses it is always all hands on deck. Hope to see you soon at the vineyard! Salute

Their story

The Sciandri Family arrived in Napa in 1992, purchasing 20 acres of untouched pasture, begging to be planted. So, it was not long before we planted our first Cabernet Sauvignon field and started our adventure in wine. Our family winemaking roots can be traced back to the small town of La Quercia, located in the Northern Tuscany region of Italy. It is here where our ancestors have been making wine for generations and inspired us to continue in that tradition. Aiming for a convergence of family and wine our label tells a story of history and generations. The leaf pays tribute to the town, Quercia, which translates to “oak” in Italian. Each grape on the logo cluster represents a member of the family, while the dual triangle pattern and blue color scheme were inspired by the town flag of Quercia. We hope our wines inspires you to gather with family and friends to raise a glass to love and life. As a family we strive to operate our winery with some of those same Old World values as the many generations before us. We are proud to farm and source all of our fruit from the Coombsville AVA (American Viticultural Area) of Napa Valley. Coombsville is the 16th, and one of Napa Valley’s newest sub appellations. Starting out as growers, we were honored to provide fruit to some of the most prestigious wine makers in the valley. It was after many years of enjoying the fruits of our labor in others’ wines that we made the family decision to start our own production.

Shadybrook Estate

The cornerstone of our philosophy begins with emphasis on the best practices of viticulture, the cultivation of grapevines. Guided by a world renown viticulturalist, our professional farming team takes the utmost care in maintaining the rolling hills of Shadybrook Estate. Implementing decades of wisdom and experience, we optimize the superior quality of our grapes by using a combination of sustainable and biodynamic farming practices. Work in the field is done by hand to provide that each vine is given the utmost of care and attention. Our whole team approach includes coordination of decision making with our winemakers ensuring vineyard and winery work toward the same goal.

Their story

The Shadybrook Estate story begins with Alice and David Alkosser’s inherent love of land and deep passion for fine estate wine. Having traveled around the world visiting and learning about the many wine producing regions, they centered their focus on Napa Valley starting in 2005. Four years later, they discovered a magnificent vineyard property in the hills of Coombsville and decided to create an estate where all of their dreams could be realized. After acquiring another two adjacent parcels, they immediately implemented the best quality viticultural and sustainable practices in order to take the existing estate vines to the next level. By the 2010 harvest, Alice and David had convinced Rudy Zuidema, a prestigious winemaker in the valley, to experiment vinifying the fruit of their new vineyard. To their delight, the resulting wine was of a quality even beyond their expectations. The market concurred and created a success story that has led them to continue producing these amazing wines ever since.

Silverado Vineyards

Silverado Vineyards has embarked on its fourth decade of producing estate-grown, produced, and bottled fine wines. Today, under the ownership of Bill and Carol Foley since 2022, Silverado Vineyards continues honor the founders’ legacy and vision. Silverado Vineyard was one of the first four in Stags Leap District to plant Cabernet in the 1960s. The winery owns three other storied vineyards across Napa Valley’s top AVAs: Miller Ranch in Yountville, Mt. George in Coombsville, and Soda Creek/Borreo Ranch. The estate is comprised of over 300 acres.

Their story

In 1981, Ron and Diane Miller and her mother, Lillian Disney, established Silverado Vineyards to make wines from the historic sites of their estate. For years, they had sold their fruit to neighboring wineries who were building global reputations for excellence. It was time, they decided, to create their own wines, their own expressions of the Napa Valley they loved and admired. The winery takes its name from the historic vineyard which surrounds it. The vineyard borrowed its name from the abandoned mining town at the top of the Napa Valley. Here, over a century ago Robert Louis Stevenson stayed and wrote, “The beginning of vine planting is like the beginning of mining for precious metals: the winegrower also ‘prospects’.”

Sodaro Estate Wines

We’re fortunate to grow our grapes in a climate and on terroir that is nothing short of perfection. Our foothills are formed by volcanic ash, covered in alluvial flows and cobblestone-streaked layers of rich loam. The nearby San Pablo Bay regulates the cold in the winter and heat in the summer, creating moderate conditions that are impeccable for allowing grapes to mature slowly and ripen evenly. To produce unmatched, world-class wine requires dedication and a willingness to persevere against formidable odds. It means understanding that your business is forever at the mercy of Mother Nature, who can at times be a hostile enemy, and at others, prove invaluable to the successful flourishing of your fruit. Vines themselves are a lot like people. Their ancestry imparts the characteristics they’ll possess as they grow, and care must be taken so only the best of their traits survive. A vine bred in a nursery is nothing more than a baby—small and delicate—and needs tender love to mature into quality fruit. As vines age they ripen in welcomed complexity, growing better with each passing year, and the wine created from their berries reflects this natural progression toward perfection. The finest wines require unending care, everlasting love, and finally, a profound passion for both the product and process. Sodaro Estate Winery was founded on the principle that from the gifts nature has imparted upon our vineyard, we can bestow the world with the very best wine.

Their story

Sodaro Estate Winery was founded in 1998 by Don and Deedee Sodaro. Rooted in a deep love of agriculture, its inception was drawn from Don’s lifelong passion for farming, which began at age 10 on his father’s land in Illinois. Among the quiet of the countryside Don found endless tranquility, and in its bounty he developed a profound appreciation for the art of growing fruit. Decades later, after launching a successful chain of inns across America, Don purchased property in Napa Valley. He hired an experienced vineyard manager and set out to build a world-class vineyard in an area now known as Coombsville AVA, revered for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Years of testing and planning ensued before Don and his vineyard manager planted even a single seed. Finally, it was time to break ground and together, they carefully nurtured each vine to develop the vineyard that yields Sodaro Estate Winery’s world-class wines today. Within a few seasons of harvest, it became evident the soil and terroir were ideal for producing outstanding fruit. An expert winemaker soon joined the team, tasked with deploying his connoisseur’s palate and depth of knowledge to transform the berries into fine wine. Thus Sodaro Estate Winery was born and the rest, as they say, is history.

Stagecoach Vineyard

This rugged terrain first made history in the 1800s, when the gentleman bandit Charles Earl Bowles, known as Black Bart, robbed the daily stagecoach that traveled over the hill from St. Helena to Monticello. Early German settlers discovered the well-drained soils and perfect growing conditions, and their grapes brought some of the highest prices in the Napa Valley. Soon a nearby luxury mineral spa was attracting visitors from San Francisco and beyond. Today, in addition to its stature as a premium vineyard, Stagecoach’s rugged beauty is home to several indigenous flora and fauna. Among the sprawling acres of thriving vines and volcanic chaparral slopes are the gnarly remnants of an old vineyard created by the area’s first settlers. And the storied Water Witch’s Well lies near the vineyard entrance to Stagecoach Vineyard, evidence of the powerful union of luck and perseverance that made this place possible. The spirit of Black Bart – who intimately knew and rode this verdant backcountry – is clearly still at home.

Situated in the serene countryside of Napa Valley, in the Coombsville AVA, Terra Solis is a 6.3 acre boutique vineyard property that grows premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. We are blessed with Sobrante soil rich in volcanic ash and rock from Mt. George and mild climate moderated by nearby San Pablo Bay. Combined with our mature French Cabernet Sauvignon vines that have been well cared for over the last 22 years, we produce some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the Napa Valley.

Their story

Terra Solis Vineyard is ideally located in the southeast corner of Napa Valley, in the Coombsville AVA. Although the Coombsville AVA spans 2000 feet in elevation, Terra Solis Vineyard is located close to the bottom of the valley floor, approximately 100 feet above sea level. Our near-level vineyard consists of sobrante loam rich in volcanic ash and rocks collected from years of soil erosion and water runoff from the nearby mountain range. Our sub-soils hold water from the rainy season, and serves as a reservoir for our vines during the dry growing season. Coombsville AVA boasts perfect weather conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. With its weather moderated by nearby San Pablo Bay, there are less heat spikes in the summer and fewer frosts in the winter. As such, our vines bud early and our grapes are harvested later. This allows our grapes to enjoy a longer hang time to grow slowly and evenly for developing complex character while preserving acidity.

Tournesol Wine Estate

Tournesol Wine Estate is located in the Coombsville AVA of the Napa Valley. Bob and Anne Arns planted 15 acres of Bordeaux varietals on a gently sloping bench 300 feet above the valley floor. Tournesol vineyard practices follow principles of sustainability and organic farming. Tournesol vineyard is certified Fish Friendly Farming and Napa Green. Tournesol vines enjoy soils of volcanic origin and perfect exposure to the sun with cool breezes from San Francisco Bay providing an ideal growing climate. The Arns strive to produce the finest estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux style blends while being responsible stewards of the land.

Their story

Proprietors Anne and Bob Arns envisioned a small vineyard estate focusing on Bordeaux varietals over 40 years ago. With a keen interest in wine, they were both very inspired by the now famous “Judgment of Paris" tasting that took place in 1976, when California wines were rated above their French counterparts. The Arns look back at that hallmark year as the beginning of their quest to produce world class wine. In 1998, they purchased their dream Napa Valley property and planted 15 acres the following year. They have a passion for sharing food and wine with friends and family and enjoy their agricultural connection to the earth.

Tulocay

Since 1975, our focus has been on small lots of site-specific wines, bottled as a single varietal, without blending. We make exceptions to this on occasion, but by focusing on crafting wines of place, we hope to give you, the drinker, a delightful and distinctive expression of one wine from one place from one time (the vintage), that you simply can’t find elsewhere.

Their story

BILL CADMAN, FOUNDER/CFO - Bill moved to Napa in the early ‘70s, when California wines were just starting to be taken seriously, and began his career by operating the crushers at Charles Krug, continuing on to enjoy a long history in the industry, working for Joe Heitz, Clos du Val, and Robert Mondavi. In 1975, after consuming copious amounts of wine with friends one evening, he made the decision to open a winery himself, noting that the old chicken houses on his property would be a perfect location for it. Rebuilding the houses himself, he’s been operating the small winery ever since. The first wine he produced was a stellar 1975 Pinot Noir from the Haynes Vineyard, and he’s used the grapes every vintage since then. BRIE CADMAN, OWNER/WINEMAKER - Born and raised in Napa, Brie has been working on the Tulocay bottling line since she could see over the Italian wooden labeling blocks. She learned a lot there—how to cuss like a sailor, tell a dirty joke, and keep quiet about being a child laborer. She managed to escape to U.C. Berkeley where she earned her bachelor’s in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a few years later returned for her Master’s in Public Health/Epidemiology. Brie has done everything from bench science to studying air pollution in the Guatemalan highlands to writing and editing. Finally she returned to Napa, and put her science background to work studying winemaking at the Napa Valley College and working with wine consultant/mentor Mark Bunter at Tulocay. Up until 2019 she was the Associate Winemaker at Judd’s Hill, and now is the winemaker at Tulocay (and the social media manager and wine club manager and whatever-else-needs-to-get-done manager).
